Someone close to me is a lesbian and she is dating a girl that looks just like a guy, with the short hair, men's clothes. I thought the whole point of being a lesbian is because you like girls, so why then go with girls that look like guys?

Basically, you're right. The whole point of being a lesbian is because you like girls. And butch girls are, in fact, girls. They differ from men hugely: they have breasts, a vagina, different body shapes, different smell, different body hair, different voices . . . the list goes on. A butch woman is definitely not a substitute for a man.

I guess it comes down to sex and gender. Gender is the way you act, behave, talk, dress, style yourself. Sex is if you're a man or a woman. We judge sexual orientation on- guess what?- sex. So if you like women, no matter what kind of woman, from the most feminine to the most masculine, you're a lesbian (and vice-versa for men who like men). But just because you have a sexual orientation doesn't mean you have to like the gender that goes along with it. There are gay men who love the male sex but like a female gender, so they date feminine men. And there is a healthy percentage of the lesbian community comprised of women who like those with a female sex and a masculine gender- those of us who love butches.

Why don't you ask your close friend what she sees in her butch girlfriend? She'll probably be able to explain it in personal terms for you.
